Floor insulation

Floor insulation can be carried out using materials such as polyurethane foam, aminoplast (injection foam), or blown insulation wool.
Various insulation materials can be used depending on the floor construction. Closed-cell polyurethane foam is dense and airtight, making it ideal for achieving high thermal performance. If you choose blown insulation such as mineral wool, cellulose, or wood fibre, you will benefit from excellent sound insulation.
When insulating floors between the ground and upper levels, the same requirements apply as for intermediate floors, meaning similar insulation materials can be used.
For older floors, effective insulation solutions are available without removing the existing floor finish, but it is important to consult professionals. In cases where the floor covering is worn out, it is recommended to remove it and insulate the floor using blown insulation or polyurethane foam, depending on the required insulation performance and moisture behaviour.
In older buildings, excess moisture from the ground is a common issue. Therefore, choosing the right insulation system is essential to ensure long-term durability.
If the wooden structure is stable, larger gaps can be filled with polystyrene beads bonded with flexible injection foam. If the structure is unstable, it should be removed, insulated with polystyrene, and finished with a concrete layer.

Floor Insulation for New Installations

In newly installed floors, insulation is typically placed beneath the concrete layer or between joists. When installing new concrete floors, a layer of closed-cell polyurethane foam is applied before pouring concrete. For timber structures, blown insulation such as cellulose, mineral wool, or wood fibre can be used between joists to achieve effective thermal and acoustic performance.

Floor Insulation with Existing Flooring

When the existing insulation between joists has deteriorated or settled, floors can be insulated without removing the floor covering. In such cases, small holes are drilled, and insulation materials such as aminoplast (injection foam), polystyrene beads, or blown insulation are installed using specialised equipment.
If the floor covering is worn out or damaged, it is recommended to replace it and carry out full insulation before installing a new finish.

Effective solutions are available for insulating old floors without damaging the existing floor covering, but it is important to consult experienced professionals.

Best Materials for Attic Insulation

Blown Loose-Fill Insulation (Mineral Wool / Fiberglass)

Blown insulation is a flexible and breathable solution that fills gaps evenly, improves thermal performance, and provides excellent sound insulation. It is ideal for timber structures and areas where moisture regulation is important.

Polyurethane Foam Insulation

Polyurethane foam is a high-performance insulation material that creates an airtight and seamless layer, reducing heat loss and improving energy efficiency. It is ideal for floors, walls, and roofs where maximum thermal performance is required.

Aminoplast (Injection Foam) Insulation

Aminoplast injection foam is designed for filling cavities without expansion pressure. It is breathable, helps control moisture, and is suitable for older buildings where safe and effective insulation is needed.
